The Simpsons

Atualizado: 24 de mar. de 2021

Oh, did I get your attention with the title of my text? Ok, aren’t we telling about the 80s? Does it seem logical to leave out “The Simpsons”? Obviously not, I knew you’d agree with me.

So…The Simpsons aren’t like any other series ever created. It’s a phenomenon that spread all over the world and amazed generation after generation. This show emphasizes the dysfunctional American family with all its quirks and perks.

This animated sitcom program has been around since 1989, therefore TV stations all over the planet are currently airing its 31st season! OK, come again?? 31st? Yes, it’s not a mistake. It is undoubtedly the longest-running American series ever, which is outstanding in a country full of new and innovative entertainment programs, every now and then.

The main characters (whom everyone knows, if you don´t… well… WAKE UP FOR LIFE, are you even alive???) are Homer, the father, who works at a nuclear power station (with his personality I would live far away from the station, good luck… Springfield people, you are at odds, just like in a Bingo game xD); Marge, the typical American housewife; Bart, a trouble-maker boy; Lisa, who is interested in Math and Philosophy; and Maggie, the baby that rarely speaks. Just like any other family from the suburban areas in the 50’s.

The Simpsons were created by Matt Groening, an American cartoonist, who was invited to produce a short series called The Simpsons shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show.

The impact that The Simpsons would have, no one could have ever predicted. It was absolutely impossible to imagine all the success it would have. This strange, sometimes annoying, but magnetic family surprised and amazed the whole world, inspiring a worldwide trend, from books and magazines to customizable shirts.

Naturally, in 31 seasons there are tons of episodes, stories and definitely thousands of guffaws! Nevertheless, I have some personal favorites. Rather than picking random episodes, I am going to elaborate on seasons. Take first and second seasons: they were the beginning and built the true “customer base” of The Simpsons. Through these seasons, this family showed the world what they were really like, and yes, I know this may sound boring… everyone knows what a family is all about, right?… mmmmmm… you’re right, it was quite the opposite and it astounded the viewers. They were like any other family, but certainly more relatable and fuller of flaws, which they never hide from the public… quite the opposite and that’s part of the fun!

All in all, The Simpsons represented a new dawn on television, they inspired millions of people, created a huge and connected fanbase (if you see some shirt with a skate drawn on it, it’s quite possible you are seeing one of them) and this can’t be stressed enough, they made folks laugh hard and rethink their actions.
