The 70s were a unique and very special decade at several levels; however, no one will ever be able to think about this decade without thinking about the magic of music.
The 60s were a complicated decade, in part because of the social problems that affected the society, but also because it was a decade of emancipation and rebelliousness. Therefore, the 70s were a time to celebrate life and have fun. It’s not that the problems had simple gone away, but people, especially young people were tired of fighting and worrying about wars, namely the Cold War and the Vietnam War, discrimination, politics and many other issues.
Frustrated with all these problems, what do you think it was the perfect refuge to society in general and young adults in particular? Yes, you are absolutely right- MUSIC!
The 70s were characterised by a huge variety in music and the listeners could choose from dozens of different and versatile genres. Disco, Punk, Soul, Progressive Rock, Funk, you name it! If you were someone who just wanted to pass a good time, you’d spend Saturday night in a club imitating the dance moves of John Travolta and his companions in “Saturd
ay Night fever” and “Grease”. (Ok, Ok you might think these are cheesy films, but back in the day they were a huge success and Travolta was a sex symbol, with thousands of girls at his feet. Do you feel silly now?) But maybe you weren’t that kind of person and your main motivation was to expose and condemn the ills of society and vent your frustrations, in which case you would listen to punk music and wear black customized clothes, like the “Sex Pistols”.
As you might have realised by now, 70s marked the beginning of a new era: The Beatles dissolved, the big festivals (like Woodstock) disappeared and a lot of new bands were formed, as well as some solo singers gained popularity and recognition- have you ever heard of David Bowie, Elton John, Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen?
Some of the most popular music genres of the 70s are the Disco and dance music, which
not just only was a relaxing and happy music, but also largely influenced the fashion of that decade. Some popular names? Gloria Gaynor, Village People, the Bee Gees, Diana Ross, among others.
Another very important movement that emerge was the Punk Rock, with heavy lyrics, controversial behaviours (like use drugs) and tight, dark clothes. Famous names? The Ramones, the Sex Pistols and the Clash.
In conclusion, love it or hate it, this decade was one on a kind, having created innovations, as far as music, lyrics, fashion and even lifestyles are concerned. Would you make Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive" your anthem out of despair for being stuck in this decade or would you sing "Tell me more" mimicking Travolta and conquering all the girls' hearts? Let me know your insight on the 70s!
